Although their bond is one made from false feelings, Hareton and Heathcliff are quite similar. Being together since birth, Hareton picked up many traits from Heathcliff, one of which includes his short temper. At the beginning of Nelly's story, Heathcliff had shown his temper to many people; most shockingly Catherine included. When Catherine had returned to the Heights after getting treated for her ankle, Heathcliff lost his temper when she hugged Heathcliff. Mainly because she looked down to make sure no dirt had come on her clothes, he felt anger towards her. Little actions like that can trigger Heathcliff to lost his temper. Replying to Catherine's arrogance, he stated "You needn't have touched me! I shall be dirty as I please: and I like to be dirty, and I will be dirty!" (Bronte, 57)
Similar to this circumstance, Hareton is almost a mirror to Heathcliff when it comes to little mistakes. Even though Cathy, being around three years younger than Hareton, is still quite childish when she first gets acquainted with her cousin, Hareton takes much offence to her childish remarks. During their first meeting, Cathy stated a thought she had that if Hareton be a servant, who must his master be. At this comment, although Cathy saying childish thoughts, Hareton grew angry fast and immediately replied, "I'll see thee damned before I be thy servant." (Bronte, 189)
Even though both men would've simply defused the conversations by calming stating that neither accusations named were true, they both turned to anger as their immediate response to all situations.
My question is, Heathcliff being the 'unique' personality he has, did Hareton benefit from his upbringing?
